How to Turn On Android's Hidden Anti-Theft Features
Imagine you're on a call by the roadside, and someone on a bike snatches your phone and speeds off. In the past, the thief had a few precious minutes with your unlocked phone: enough to open your bank app, read your OTPs and switch off tracking. Not anymore. Android now has hidden anti-theft features that can lock your phone the second it is snatched, lock it when the thief turns off the internet, and let you lock it from any browser with just your phone number.
Most people have never turned them on. This guide shows you every Android theft protection feature, what each one does, and exactly where to switch it on, on Google Pixel, Samsung and other Android phones.
Quick answer
- Go to Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection and turn on Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock.
- On Samsung, look under Settings > Security and privacy > Lost device protection > Theft protection.
- These features need Android 10 or newer and a screen lock (PIN, pattern or password).

1. Theft Detection Lock: Locks the Moment It's Snatched
This is the coolest one. Your phone uses on-device AI plus its motion sensors, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to recognise the movement of someone grabbing it and running, cycling or driving away. When it detects that, it locks the screen straight away, so the thief is left holding a locked phone.
How to turn it on: Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection > Theft Detection Lock. On Pixel phones you may also find it under Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Theft protection.
Note: if the switch is greyed out, your phone doesn't support it. It only works while your screen is unlocked, which is exactly when a snatch is most dangerous.
2. Offline Device Lock: Beats the Airplane Mode Trick
Thieves know phones can be tracked, so the first thing many do is turn on Airplane Mode or switch off data. Offline Device Lock watches for this. If your unlocked phone goes offline for a short time, it locks the screen automatically. It can trigger up to twice in 24 hours.
How to turn it on: Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection > Offline Device Lock.
3. Remote Lock: Lock Your Phone From Any Browser
Lost your phone and can't remember your Google password? With Remote Lock you only need your phone number. Borrow any phone or computer, go to android.com/lock, enter your number and lock your phone.
How to turn it on: Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection > Remote Lock. You can also add an optional security question so a stranger who knows your number can't lock your phone as a prank.
What you need: a screen lock, an active SIM, a verified phone number and Find Hub turned on. If the phone is offline, it locks as soon as it reconnects.
4. Identity Check: Your Face or Fingerprint, No Exceptions
Many thieves watch you type your PIN before they snatch the phone. Identity Check stops a stolen PIN from being enough. When you're away from trusted places such as your home, sensitive actions (like changing Google Account settings) require your fingerprint or face, and your PIN alone won't work.
How to turn it on: Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection > Identity Check. You need a screen lock, biometrics and trusted places set up. It's only available on certain phones.
5. Failed Authentication Lock
If someone keeps guessing your PIN, or tries to get into your apps with wrong attempts, this locks the phone automatically.
Where: Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection > Failed Authentication Lock.
6. Protect Sensitive Settings (Already On)
On newer Android versions, turning off Find Hub or making the screen stay on longer needs your PIN, password or fingerprint. This stops a thief from quietly disabling tracking. It's on by default as long as you have a screen lock.
Samsung Galaxy Users
On Samsung phones, go to Settings > Security and privacy > Lost device protection > Theft protection. You'll find the same Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock and related options, alongside Samsung's own lost-device tools.
Bonus Tricks Every Android User Should Do Today
- Save your IMEI number. Dial *#06# and screenshot it, then save it somewhere outside your phone. The police and your network may ask for it if your phone is stolen.
- Turn on Find Hub (formerly Find My Device) so you can locate, ring or erase your phone from another device.
- Use a strong screen lock. A 6-digit PIN or password is much harder to guess or shoulder-surf than a simple pattern.
- Lock your banking apps. Turn on fingerprint login and app-level PINs in your bank apps.
- Hide notification content on the lock screen so OTPs don't show when your phone is locked.
What to Do If Your Phone Is Stolen
- Go to android.com/lock from any device and lock your phone with your number.
- Use Find Hub to see its location, or erase it if you can't get it back.
- Call your network to block your SIM and get a replacement with the same number.
- Call your bank to block your cards and mobile banking.
- Change your Google, email and social media passwords from another device.
- Report to the police with your IMEI number.
FAQs
Which Android version do I need for theft protection?
Android 10 or newer. The features come through Google Play services, so make sure it's up to date.
Why is Theft Detection Lock greyed out?
Your phone doesn't support it. Some low-RAM Android Go phones and some tablets don't get every feature.
Can I lock my phone without my Google password?
Yes. With Remote Lock turned on, go to android.com/lock and use your phone number.
Does Theft Detection Lock drain the battery?
It runs on-device and is designed to be light. It only checks for snatch movements while your phone is unlocked.
Will these features stop a thief from resetting my phone?
Your phone still has Google's factory reset protection, which asks for your Google Account after a reset. Together with these features, a stolen phone becomes much less useful to a thief.
