Introducing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2: The Latest Chipset for Entry-Level 5G Smartphones

Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, their newest chipset designed for entry-level 5G smartphones. This cutting-edge chip marks the next iteration in the Snapdragon 4 series, succeeding the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 SoC that was launched in 2022.

Boasting a 4nm process node, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 delivers a remarkable 10 percent increase in performance compared to its predecessor. A standout feature of this chip is its integration of the Qualcomm X61 5G modem, capable of achieving impressive download speeds of up to 2.5Gbps. Additionally, it offers NavIC and dual-frequency GNSS support to enhance navigation capabilities.


Qualcomm has shared details about the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2's availability, revealing that upcoming smartphone models from manufacturers like Redmi and Vivo will incorporate this chipset. Consumers can expect smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 to hit the market in the second half of 2023.


The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC consists of two high-performance cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six power-efficient cores clocked at 2GHz. It showcases a notable 10 percent performance boost over its predecessor, while also supporting UFS 3.1 storage and up to LPDDR5x RAM running at 3200MHz. Moreover, the chip enables full-HD+ displays with a refreshing 120Hz rate.


Qualcomm's on-device AI technology is a highlight of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, offering features such as background noise reduction during voice and video calls. Connectivity options include USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C and support for Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4+ technology, which follows the USB-PD (Power Delivery) standard.


The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 features the Qualcomm Snapdragon X61 5G modem, making it the first chip in the Snapdragon 4-series to support the 3GPP Release 16 5G standard. With the capability to achieve download speeds of up to 2.5Gbps, it also supports Bluetooth 5.1 and dual-band Wi-Fi 5 connectivity. Furthermore, it offers GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, NavIC, and QZSS location services, with dual-frequency GNSS (L1 + L5) support.


For capturing photos and videos, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 supports a dual camera setup featuring two 16-megapixel cameras or a single 32-megapixel camera. Both setups provide 30fps zero shutter lag support. Video recording capabilities include 1080p resolution at 60fps for a single camera and 30fps for a dual camera, as well as 720p resolution at 120fps for slow-motion footage. Qualcomm has integrated AI features to enhance low-light photography and video recording, incorporating Multi Camera Temporal Filtering (MCTF) for noise reduction.
