WhatsApp Recent Media Suggestions: How to Use or Turn It Off
What is Recent Media Suggestions?
When you open a chat, WhatsApp can now show the most recent item you added to your phone's gallery. That could be a photo you just took, a screenshot, an image you downloaded or a video saved from another app. Instead of tapping the attachment button and scrolling through your gallery, you tap the suggestion and send it.
How it looks in the chat
WhatsApp is reportedly testing two designs, so you may see one of these:
- A small pop-up above the chat bar with a thumbnail of your latest photo or video.
- A thumbnail in place of the camera icon in the chat bar, for a short time.
Either way, you can simply ignore it and keep chatting.
It never sends anything on its own
This is the important part for privacy. Tapping the suggestion opens WhatsApp's editor first, where you can preview the photo or video, add a caption or a sticker, and then decide whether to send it. WhatsApp does not send media automatically, so there's no risk of a private screenshot going out by accident just because it showed up.
How to turn off Recent Media Suggestions
The feature is switched on automatically for users who get it. If you don't want WhatsApp showing your latest gallery items in chats:
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
- Tap Chats.
- Find Recent media suggestions and switch it off.
WhatsApp will then stop showing the suggestions in your conversations.
Why you may not see it yet
The rollout is gradual. Even if you have the latest WhatsApp version, it may take days or weeks to reach your account. Make sure WhatsApp is updated from the Play Store or App Store, then check again later.
Is it useful?
If you often send screenshots of payments, receipts or delivery details to customers, or share photos right after taking them, this saves several taps every time. If you share your phone with others or keep sensitive photos, you may prefer to switch it off so recent images don't pop up while someone is looking at your screen.
This is WhatsApp's second chat shortcut this week, after Smart Text Actions, which turns numbers, dates and addresses into tap shortcuts.
