Mortal Kombat 1 Unveils Kameo Fighters in Intense Gameplay Trailer

During the Summer Game Fest, Mortal Kombat 1 unveiled an extended gameplay trailer that showcased its exhilarating and violent nature in all the right ways. Serving as a reboot and the start of a fresh timeline, the game introduces a new universe shaped by Liu Kang, now a Fire God following his ascension in Mortal Kombat 11.

While familiar characters make their return, they sport new appearances and origin stories, with Scorpion and Sub-Zero depicted as reborn brothers. The creator of the MK franchise, Ed Boon, took the stage to provide insights into the innovative Kameo Fighter system.

The gameplay trailer primarily serves as a visual spectacle, highlighting the gory and brutal Fatalities that fans can anticipate in Mortal Kombat 1. The arenas exude immersion, ranging from rustic Asian restaurants to shrines and even an opulent villa reminiscent of Dead Island 2. True to the franchise's style, the Fatalities are over-the-top, featuring icicle stabbings, heart-ripping, and electric bolts tearing through opponents' torsos. Amidst the bloodshed, fighters can call upon allies to briefly join the fight and deliver a burst of damage mid-combo before retreating from the arena. These allies, known as Kameo fighters, were further detailed by Boon.

Once players select their main fighter from the default roster, Mortal Kombat 1 unveils a second roster consisting of an entirely different set of fighters. As the name suggests, these fighters appear as tag-team partners with a simple button press, unleashing a series of attacks. The resulting moves vary depending on the movement button pressed simultaneously. For example, summoning a Kameo while holding the down button will trigger a different motion compared to other inputs. Players have the freedom to call upon these characters whenever they desire, although there is a meter to prevent excessive spamming. While a full list of Kameo fighters wasn't revealed, it appears that Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Jax, and Kano will be available at launch.

During the presentation, Boon elaborated on the Kameo system, stating, "Some of the characters are going to be available as Kameos as well as the main roster fighters. So you can play Sub-Zero with Sub-Zero. But a lot of our Kameo fighters are kind of nods back to our first game, so you'll notice Sonya and Kano, and Jax are in their older costumes." Furthermore, renowned martial artist and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, famous for his role in Bloodsport (1988), portrays Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1, available as a skin in the Kombat Pack add-on, included with the Premium and Collector's Edition.

Mortal Kombat 1 is set to release on September 19 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch. Pre-ordering the game grants players access to the formidable sorcerer Shang Tsung, along with exclusive beta access in August for PS5 and Xbox Series S/X players.
